ADEM Deadline

S.F. Democrats urged to run, vote for delegates to California Democratic Convention in April

Deadline is Friday, Dec. 14 for candidates to complete online application

SAN FRANCISCO (Dec. 9, 2012)—San Francisco Democratic Party Chair Mary Jung today encouraged local Democrats to consider becoming candidates for delegate to the upcoming state Democratic Party Convention in April, and to take part in electing delegates at the Assembly District Election Meetings next month.

The deadline for prospective delegate candidates to complete the online application form is at the end of this week: Friday, Dec. 14 at 5:00 p.m.

“The way we keep San Francisco’s Democratic Party strong is to make sure it stays welcoming, diverse and participatory,” said Jung.  “That’s why I strongly encourage local Democrats to not only take part in activities like campaigns and delegate elections, but to consider running for leadership roles themselves.  Delegates to the state convention get to work with Democrats from across California to advance our party’s values.  They choose the state party’s officers, endorse candidates and ballot measures, and much more.  It’s a great way to meet new people while making a real difference.”

Once delegate candidates are qualified by completing the online application before the Friday, Dec. 14 deadline, they run at Assembly District Election Meetings, or ADEMs, held in each of California’s 80 Assembly Districts over the weekend of Jan. 12 and 13, 2013.  Participating voters elect six men and six women to represent their district for both the 2013 and 2014 California Democratic Conventions.

The application can be accessed here:  There is an application fee of $20, which can be waived if it presents a financial hardship.

San Francisco has two Assembly Districts: the 17th, which is wholly contained in the City’s eastern half; and the 19th, which western San Francisco shares with a portion of northwestern San Mateo County.

  • For the 17th Assembly District (represented by Assemblymember Tom Ammiano) the ADEM will be Saturday, Jan. 12, with registration beginning at 10:00 a.m.  The location is the African American Art & Cultural Center at 762 Fulton St. Suite 300 in San Francisco.  Paul Hogarth, who serves as the 17th ADEM Convener, may be contacted by email at, or by telephone at (415) 509-2592.
  • For the 19th Assembly District (represented by Assemblymember Phil Ting) the ADEM will be held at Merced Room at Westlake Park, 145 Lake Medced Blvd. in Daly City.  The time and day (either Saturday, Jan. 12 or Sunday, Jan. 13), and ADEM Convenor are still to be determined.

Voters may only participate in the ADEM if they are Democratic voters residing in the district, and if they registered to vote by the Oct. 22, 2012 deadline.  Exceptions are granted to those who turned 18 or were naturalized after the deadline, provided they have registered or will register onsite.

The 2013 California Democratic Convention will be held at the Sacramento Convention Center from April 12-14, 2013.
